Kampala: 8th April, 2020:
Uganda People’s Congress would like to appeal and encourage all Ugandans and the entire world to use the forthcoming period of Easter to pray for the good health of those already infected with COVID19 Pandemic while at their respective homes, ask God to save our lives and protect Doctors and Nurses who are at the frontline of the war against this deadly pandemic disease that has claimed a number of lives of people in other countries of the world!
According to Ministry of Health as of today, Uganda has 52 confirmed cases of COVID19 and that they are in good conditions undergoing treatment at Mulago National Specialized Hospital, Entebbe Grade B Hospital, Hoima and Adjumani Regional Referral Hospitals.
We thank the Ministry of Health that is at forefront of the fight to contain this new virus of Corona for their efforts, applaud the health experts for working tirelessly in a bid to save People’s lives and all those who have and/or are contributing in different capacities as we go through this challenging situation! We believe that since we have one enemy, the win is on our side and our efforts should therefore be redoubled.
The Party welcomes Government measures and response towards COVID19 Pandemic such as temporary suspension of schools/University, ban of; public gatherings, worshipping places, public and private transport, a 14 days lockdown and among others in order to stop the spread of the virus and there is hope that if the general public effectively follow the set up measures, we shall win the fight against Corona virus.
As we go through this lockdown, there is however a touching public outcry as majority of our people are in informal sector which is the most affected since their businesses are majorly hand to mouth and they are challenged to: feed their families, pay water and electricity bills as home necessities!
We appreciate Government for launching the Food Relief Program, but the distribution rate is very low and people are suffering! The Government is therefore called upon to redouble her energy and provide people with the necessary necessities such as on addition to posho and beans: salt, soap and consider clearing water and electricity bills for tax payers during this period. The Government of Uganda should borrow a leaf from the Government of Ghana that has declared to meet such bills during the lockdown.
Much as we welcome the drastic measures by the President, the Party is very much concerned about the excessive use of force by some police and UPDF/LDUs officers while implementing Presidential directives. We strongly condemn it! It is good that Police and UPDF leadership have heard the public outcry and moved a step to bring such errant officers to book. UPC urges Police and other security agencies to use lawful methods and stick to their constitutional roles of among other things keeping law and order.
UPC emphasizes the general public to monitor a social distance, wash hands with soap regularly, sanitize, quarantine and report any suspected cases of COVID19 to responsible authorities and adhere to all other guidelines and measures set up by the Ministry of Health and Government as we fight the virus. The Party is still conducting its activities and Communication online until further notice as communicated earlier on.
God says in the Bible, “Do not be afraid; I am with you; I am your God. Let nothing terrify you! I will make you strong and help you. I will protect you and save you.” Isaiah 41: 10. So let us use this Easter period to pray to God, and through Him we shall overcome this challenging situation.
