Mikel Arteta has been backed to do “a great job” by his Los Angeles Rams counterpart Sean McVay after talks between the two last week.

The Arsenal head coach initiated talks with McVay last week to ask for his advice on managing small-sided training sessions, which are expected to be the norm in the Premier League as they step up plans for a return to action next month.

Sessions of seven or fewer players will constitute quite a change for the likes of Arteta but NFL boss McVay and his coaching staff are used to working with smaller groups and indeed began their virtual training camps this week.

McVay came out of the talks with Arteta, Edu and Raul Sanllehi feeling he had taken away as much as his Arsenal counterparts did and lavished praise at his opposite number in the Kroenke, Sports and Entertainment ownership group.

“He is really an impressive guy,” McVay told reporters in Los Angeles.

“I think he’ll do a great job, and I’m certainly a fan of Arsenal and love following them, just through those relationships, through the Kroenke family.

“But it was more than anything a chance for us to connect, kind of share some ideas.”

football.london revealed last week that Arsenal have plans in place that will allow them to move swiftly to the next stage of training once they are given the greenlight

Currently the first team are working at London Colney in individual, voluntary sessions with no more than five players occupying the training ground’s 10 pitches at any one time.

Players arrive at the training ground, whose indoor facilities remain closed, in their training gear and carry out solo work that is observed from afar by Arsenal’s strength and conditioning staff with medical personnel on hand if required.

The majority of the squad took up Arsenal’s offer to use their Colney base for training rather than carry out their workouts from home.
