The Charlotte Hornets have signed head coach Charles Lee to a contract extension after a season that saw the franchise make significant strides, emerging as one of the league’s stronger teams despite a sluggish start.
Although Charlotte ultimately missed the playoffs following a loss in the play-in tournament, the organization showed notable progress during Lee’s second year at the helm.
The team posted a 25-win improvement over the previous campaign, continuing its rebuilding efforts under Lee’s guidance.
Lee initially joined the Hornets before the 2024-25 season, bringing experience as an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks, Milwaukee Bucks, and Boston Celtics.
Executive Jeff Peterson credited Lee with helping establish the culture and structure the franchise aims to build moving forward.
“Charles has done an outstanding job establishing a foundation for who we want to be as a team,” Peterson said. “From day one, Charles and his staff have prioritized player development, creating an environment where each of our players are committed to getting better and continue to improve. He has built a team-first culture rooted in accountability, hard work and professionalism. I’m excited to keep working closely with Charles as we continue to build the Hornets for long-term success.”
Lee expressed gratitude for the chance to remain in charge, saying he believes the team is moving in the right direction.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to continue leading this team and building on what we’ve started here in Charlotte,” Lee said. “I want to thank Rick, Gabe and Jeff for their support as well as my coaching staff and the players for their tireless work and dedication.”
Lee added that the roster’s progress is encouraging, and he remains optimistic about the future.
“I’m excited about the direction we’re headed and our team’s bright future,” Lee said. “Our players have shown a real commitment to growth, and I’m proud of the culture we’re establishing together. We’re just getting started, and I’m looking forward to the work ahead.”
