Christantus Uche (22), Getafe’s breakout star from last season, will not stay at Crystal Palace after failing to trigger the mandatory purchase clause that would have cost the Premier League side €20 million for his rights. Getafe sporting director Toni Muñoz confirmed the news ahead of the derby against Rayo Vallecano: “His return is taken for granted because the player hasn’t met the objective, and it’s clear he’s coming back.”
Uche, who initially joined as a defensive midfielder but emerged as a striker, attracted several offers last summer. The option that satisfied Getafe was a loan deal with an obligatory purchase clause if he started 10 Premier League matches. What seemed like an achievable target turned out differently—the club never fully trusted him, and although he made 14 league appearances, all came off the bench.

The real challenge isn’t Uche’s return—he remains a valuable asset for coach Bordalás, should he stay on. Rather, Getafe had counted on those €20 million to ease salary cap constraints for the upcoming season. Now, with his market value diminished, finding a club willing to pay a similar fee looks difficult.
