Following the Liaoning Flying Leopards’ disappointing elimination in the CBA playoffs’ first round, veteran Li Xiaoxu announced his retirement, stating that this was his final season and thanking coaches Yang Ming and Ugo for their trust. Li’s storied career with Liaoning has come to a close.
But Li is not the only veteran who may leave the CBA stage after this season. Liu Xiaoyu, a 37-year-old guard born in 1989, is also facing a pivotal moment. Having played 20 seasons in the league, Liu has suited up for five teams: Guangdong Southern Tigers, Shanghai Sharks, Beijing Ducks, Beijing Royal Fighters, and Ningbo Rockets. He has been a multiple-time All-Star and won a CBA championship.

After nearly becoming unemployed this season, Liu received an offer from the Ningbo Rockets and joined the squad. In the regular season, he appeared in 29 games, averaging 4.4 points and 1.9 assists per game. In the playoffs, he elevated his performance to 8 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1 assist per game, proving he still has plenty left in the tank. Liu also served as an assistant coach for the team, helping with translation and tactical planning.
The season has been a success for Liu and the Rockets. Not only did he contribute on the court, but his presence helped the team reach the playoffs for the first time in franchise history, setting a new best record.

However, given his age and the fact that his contract expires this summer, it is widely expected that Liu will not return as a player next season. Known for his deep understanding of the game, quiet demeanor, and humility, Liu is likely to focus solely on his assistant coaching role.
With Liu’s potential departure from the player roster, analysts have suggested that Guo Allen could be a natural replacement. Guo’s contract with the Guangzhou Loong Lions also expires this summer, putting him on the trading block. Guangzhou is focusing on developing young talent like Guan Ziyu, which could create a positional conflict and push Guo out.
The Ningbo Rockets, looking to build on their momentum and take another step forward next season, will need experienced veterans to play a role similar to Liu’s this year—bringing playoff-tested savvy and leadership. Guo Allen fits that description perfectly. Fans are now left to wonder: could the veteran guard become the next key piece in Ningbo’s rise?
