Ohtani went 0-for-4 in Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Braves, snapping his hitting streak at four games. He has not homered since April 26 against the Chicago Cubs, and all eyes are on whether he will hit his seventh home run—his first in 11 games as a batter.
The opposing starter is right-hander Trevor McDonald (25), in his third MLB season. McDonald has made only one relief appearance this year, but he impressed in a start against the San Diego Padres on June 4, allowing one run on two hits over seven innings. Ohtani faced him once last September 21, going 1-for-3 with a strikeout.
Sasaki suffered his third loss in his last outing on June 2 against the St. Louis Cardinals, giving up three runs on five hits over six innings, but it was his first quality start of the season and second of his MLB career. He now holds a 1-3 record with a 5.97 ERA.
Mookie Betts (33) returns to the lineup after being placed on the injured list on April 5 with a right oblique strain. In a corresponding move, infielder Alex Freeland (24) was optioned to the minors.
