An arbitration specialist has weighed in on the controversial disallowed goal that could have given Palmeiras a victory against Remo in the Brazilian Championship.
Palmeiras and Remo drew 1-1 last Sunday (10) in a match valid for the 15th round of the Brasileirão. The game featured a disallowed goal in the 50th minute of the second half, a decision that, according to Renata Ruel, left Abel Ferreira’s side unfairly treated. Bruno Fuchs’ strike was ruled out due to a handball by Flaco López before the finish.
“The rule states that a player who scores a goal directly with his hand or arm, even if accidental, or who scores immediately after the ball touches his hand or arm, even accidentally, commits an infraction,” the expert began. “In this play, the ball accidentally touches López’s arm, but he is not the player who scores the goal, as the rule states. The ball even comes from a header by an opponent, and López’s arm is in a natural movement. It’s an accidental touch, not a deliberate action. If it were a deliberate arm or one that increased the body’s space, then we could consider it an infraction,” she added.
“But we see it’s an accidental touch, and then the ball falls to Fuchs, who never touches the ball with his arm and scores. According to the rules, since the touch is accidental and not by the player who scored, the goal should have been validated. The CBF often instructs referees in an incorrect and different way from the rule, and that confuses the referees. But by the rule, the goal should have been allowed,” concluded Renata Ruel.

Bruno Fuchs, the player who scored the disallowed goal during stoppage time against Remo on Sunday night (10) at Mangueirão in the Brasileirão, also commented on the referee’s decision. With the goal canceled, the teams finished 1-1 in Belém-PA.
The goal occurred at 49 minutes when the Palmeiras number 3 found the net, but after a VAR check, the referee spotted a touch on Flaco López’s arm during the play.
“I said that, from what I know of the rule, if Flaco had scored the goal, it would have to be disallowed. The ball hit Flaco’s hand, but then it fell to me. The rule is very clear: it wasn’t an intentional handball from him. It was a ball close by, and it came to me, and I scored. I don’t know if they have to know the rule. I tried to talk, I said: ‘Klein, the rule is clear, the ball hit Flaco and came to me, it didn’t go to him.’ In every game, all teams talk about the refereeing, I don’t know if the players need to understand it better or the referees themselves,” lamented the defender after the draw.
Bruno Fuchs also spoke about the game being delayed by 1 hour and 38 minutes due to heavy rain in Belém, and regretted that Palmeiras only got one point in this round against the second-to-last placed team.
“But let’s see, the CBF will review again what the rules are.”
