Palmeiras and Remo played to a 1-1 draw on Sunday in Belém, in a match that started nearly two hours late due to heavy rain at the Mangueirão stadium. Despite enjoying a numerical advantage for much of the second half after Remo’s Zé Ricardo was sent off in the 28th minute, the visitors struggled to break down a disciplined defense and left frustrated after Round 15 of the Brazilian Serie A.
With 34 points, Abel Ferreira’s side—still serving a suspension for indiscipline—remained at the top of the table, safe from losing their position this round. Their next fixture is against Jacuipense in the return leg of the Copa do Brasil fifth round on Wednesday. Remo, sitting in the relegation zone with nine points, will also face Bahia in the knockout competition.
The match was originally scheduled for 4 PM but kicked off at 5:40 PM after waterlogged patches on the pitch forced two delays. Once play began, the slippery surface hampered fluid football, but Remo struck first within a minute. A poor clearance by the Palmeiras defense allowed Alef Manga to control and fire home from inside the area.
Remo didn’t sit back after taking the lead, pressing high and relying on a solid defensive structure led by Zé Welisson to contain Palmeiras’ creative players. Arías and Allan tried to unlock the defense through the middle but failed to inject pace into their attacks. A Patrick passing error in midfield handed Palmeiras a chance to equalize, and Ramón Sosa made no mistake, leveling the score just before halftime.
The second half brought early threats from Remo, with Carlos Miguel forced into a save and Marcelinho hitting the crossbar. Palmeiras gradually took control of possession but lacked the cutting edge to break through. The visitors pushed forward more aggressively after Zé Ricardo’s red card, yet repeated their earlier mistakes—overcomplicating play and failing to penetrate Remo’s compact defense. Bruno Fuchs thought he had scored a late header from a corner, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review showed the ball had touched Flaco López’s arm beforehand.
