Lira—28, September 2021: Hailstones has destroyed over 500 hectors of rice plantation at Olweny Irrigation scheme in Bar sub-county, Lira district.

Rice farmers say they are counting a loss worth shs900 million following the havoc.

Speaking to news reporters, Moses Engim, who is the chairperson Olweny irrigation scheme, said this happened on the evening of 23 September 2021.

“… it has affected both members of the scheme and out-growers,” he adds.

Engim said some of the affected farmers were due to harvest their rice in the coming months of October and November.

He said some farmers who took loans from different financial lending institutions are worried about how they will pay back ‘these loans’ since their only hope was from the rice harvest.

The Olweny rice irrigation project started in 2000 and has 1500 members venturing into rice production with over 1000 out growers.
