UPC: Walubiri denies report he’s naming new cabinet

UPC's Peter Walubiri [M] Otto Ishaa Amiza [L] and Mary Grace Amek during a press conference on Thursday

Soon after he was declared a winner in December 2020, both of his rivals, Mr Ochieno Joseph and Dr Dan Okello trashed the elections outcome.

Oyam – 27, February 2021: Last week after ‘several’ reports from some of the Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) sources stating that their leader Mr Peter Walubiri was set to name a new cabinet by end of the week, it has been denied and termed ‘speculative’.

TND News had been told that Mr Walubiri who was declared a winner of the December 2020 UPC delegates conference as a new party president, would announce a new cabinet.

One of the sources said: He (Mr Walubiri) will announce the cabinet soon; new faces expected.”

Asked about the new faces, the source added: “Expect Patrick Aroma (Lira) and one thing I know, is that Hon. Ishaa Otto Amiza (the current Secretary General) seems to be going out.”

Speaking to this publication on phone last week, Hon. Otto who’s also the former Oyam South MP who again contested for the same seat in the January 14 elections, said he wasn’t aware of any new changes.

Both Mr Peter Walubiri and Hon. James Micheal Akena say they’re the legitimate UPC party presidents.

The pair’s terms of office will expire in 2025.

“That’s speculation. Who told you that?” Mr Walubiri said in a phone interview on Saturday.

“I have never formally said so. When we are ready we will make it public,” he added.

He also says the current cabinet is working and thus no need to hurry.

Asked how far he has moved with making friendship with his fellow candidates, and ensuring they all back him, he said “a lot of discussions go on daily basis with party members”.

When all these are normalized, he says, they will be made public.

Soon after he was declared winner in December, both his rivals, Mr Ochieno Joseph and Dr Dan Okello trashed the elections outcome.
