Kampala – 2 November 2020: The electoral commission (EC) chairman has Monday morning and afternoon nominated three army Generals to contest for the 2021 presidential seat.

Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, the EC chair and his team first nominated NRM flag bearer Yoweri T. Kaguta Museveni.

Gen. Museveni who’s also the incumbent president wants to extend his rule to 40 years.

He was flanked by his wife, Janet Kataha Museveni, Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, NRM Secretary General Justine Kasule Lumumba, among others.

Gen. Museveni soon left for Speke Hotel Munyonyo where he was going to launch NRM manifesto for 2021-2026 under the title “Securing Your Future”.

Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde was second to be nominated as a presidential candidate after his nomination processes was earlier paused by EC due to “slight anomaly” on his nomination papers.

Soon after his nomination, Gen. Tumukunde, a former spy chief, security minister (his immediate position before being sacked), asked teachers, medical workers, farmers and security team to count on him.

Under his pressure group “Renewed Uganda” and a slogan “It’s Possible”, Gen. Tumukunde said he’s the right man to take Uganda forward, further saying he will reduce the cost of electricity, among other interventions.

Another former army commander, Gen. Mugisha Muntu Greg was nominated at 15:32pm and he told media shortly that his Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) party, now 1 year and six months old, is the right party to lead Uganda.

As he always say, “put country before self”, Gen. Muntu says many people still don’t believe in their approach “but time will tell”, he added.

The only young aspirant in the race, John Katumba could not be nominated because he couldn’t show proof of payment of shs20m.

Addressing the media shortly after being rejected by EC, John said he was unable to pay the nomination fee because “bank needed his Tax Identification Number (TIN)”.

A fresh graduate from Makerere University “with no job or a company”, he told media he will look into other option.

Nomination of aspirants for president ends on Tuesday with NUP presidential flag bearer, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine, Patrick Oboi Amuriat of FDC, Joseph Kabuleta (Independent) and other two all expected to be nominated.

It’s not yet clear if DP Norbert Mao will be nominated. Mao’s signatures were received by the commission last week on Friday after the EC had already issued nomination schedules for ten (10) candidates.

However, according to EC’s acting spokesperson, Mr Paul Bukenya, nomination of aspirants like Mao and others can still take place.

Last week, he told a press briefing that other aspirants’ documents were under verification.
