Lira—18 October 2020: Lango is grieving after news of the sudden demise of its son, a veteran politician and a leader.

Mr Peter Owiny Guduzu died according to various reports on Sunday morning from Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala from where he was admitted.

Besides some family members saying he died of COVID-19, there is no official statement from the Health Ministry on the ‘claim’.

“Not sure COVID-19 killed him. The rightful officer will get back to you within 24 hours,” an officer who works in the Ministry of Health’s communications department told TND News on Sunday on condition of anonymity.

Mr Guduzu was the Mayor of Lira Municipality (now a City) from 2006 to 2011 on UPC ticket. He will be remembered for fighting corruption and promoting accountability and transparency for the term he was in office.

“Wimeja” became his popular slogan and later a moniker. The deceased frequently told people, including his cabinet, to work on the table “Wimeja” and urged them to desist from corrupt tendencies.

After news of his unexpected death, people of different calibres who spoke to TND News praised his leadership qualities, and what he will be remembered for. Selected comments and eulogies below.

Mr Isaah Otto Amiza, the former Oyam South MP, also vying for the same position in the forthcoming elections, said: “Peter Owiny Guduzu was a very humble personality who treasured to pursue clean leadership. The reason he introduced the popular “Wimeja” slogan of doing things openly on the table.”

He added: “Open and transparent. He was a true and genuine Congress, not the “UPC of give me so that I give you”.

Mr Patrick Abal, a clan head of Arakongoda, said: “As a mayor he was “on-the-spot” of activity, he was present and personally in charge; a man of results. I was looking forward to his second term as Mayor of Lira Municipality/City. As a senior citizen and a father, Guduzu was a mentor and morally upright. He died with his integrity intact. May his soul rest in peace.”

Willy Omodo Omodo, an aspirant for Lira City Mayor in the forthcoming general elections, equally praised Guduzu for his leadership.

“I respect him. He replaced my late dad after deputy Mayor at that time took charge following my father’s death,” Omodo told TND News.

“Much as he did not do exactly as my late father, he fought corruption with his Wimeja slogan,” Omodo added.

According to Omodo, the deceased had retired from active politics and was backing a youth to take over.

In one of the gatherings in Lira City East Division recently, Omodo said Guduzu spoke very well.

“….this time for the young people. Many people wanted me to contest, but I will play an advisory role,” Mr Omodo said of late Peter Owiny Guduzu.

In 2006, in order to add his knowledge, Guduzu went back to school. He was admitted to study a degree in Public Administration at Gulu University.

His decision to study more was to reclaim his seat in the 2011 general elections after he was accused of possessing “no degree”. Publication’s WhatsApp No. +256 752 169 448.
