Jinja—25, May 2020: Jinja West Parish Councillor to the Municipal Council, Bernard Mbayo has set aside shs50m to purchase more relief food for distribution to residents who are extensively hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mbayo’s revelation comes days after increased cases of people who are starving following lockdown [extended] for another two weeks, dashing hopes of casual workers who earn from hand to mouth.
Although many companies and organisations have contributed to the Jinja district task-force, reports suggest that over 90% of the needy population in Kimaka, Sakabusolo, Makenke, Kamuli road, Danida, Kikaramoja and Kibugambata, among others are yet to receive the help.
Other areas include: Mafubira, Kisima and Rwabitooke islands, Rippon Falls Village, Local Village and some landing sites that have been swallowed up by the rising water levels on Lake Victoria.
“… there is no way we as leaders can sit in the comfort of our homes watching TV when hundreds of thousands of our people take two or three days without a meal…” he said.
The councillor, after getting clearance and guidance from the district task-force, names Hared Petroleum Ltd and Hope For African Child Foundation as some of his partners who have joined hands with him to ease the situation.
Among the beneficiaries are the established and support staff of Jinja Regional Referral Hospital who are the front-liners at this critical period of saving the lives of citizens.
At the hospital, staff received 1,000kgs of posho with more promise by Mbayo that other items like rice and sugar would be donated soon.
Giving the donation, he said it to ensure that medics concentrate on their noble cause.
Jinja Hospital currently has about six COVID-19 patients undergoing treatment at the isolated Psychiatric Unit.
There is a high hope that they will all heal and get back to their families.
Mbayo who subscribes to the opposition party, FDC explains that the donation is simply a humanitarian gesture and has nothing to do with politics at this critical moment when saving lives supersedes everything.
