Farmers Centre (Uganda Ltd) Director, Jannet Akello aka “Owec Anyen Pi” Alebtong District Women has donated food stuff [posho] worth shs700, 000 including a cash contribution of shs100, 000.
The donations were well-received by Minister for General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister, Hon Mary Karoro Okurut.
Ms Akello told TND News that she asked the Minister [government] to direct her donations to benefit her people of Alebtong district and the cash contribution be used for the purchase of planting supplies like seeds and tools for the farmers in Alebtong district and Lango sub-region.
The donor who is a commercial farmer herself, is one person among the most active people from Lango who are working towards changing the livelihood of small holder farmers in the sub-region.
She’s making it possible through agricultural productivity, processing and marketing as well as creating vast opportunity for youths, farmers, women and men within the region and beyond.
“All other donations together with my donations be directed to farmers in Lango sub-region,” she asked Minister Okurut.
Akello has condemned The New Vision’s inaccuracy for telling Ugandans she contributed only shs10, 000, not shs100, 000 in cash.
“I will hold it against The New Vision for damages caused. I know my contributions are over and above that amount 10 times although it is true that I made a special request that government should use that money on farmers in Alebtong district,” she added.
“My request was welcomed by Minister Karoro Okurut to support Alebtong district with planting materials, seeds and hand hoes,” Akello further told this contemporary digital newspaper, Thursday.
She urged those with something to come out and donate to the most affected people as coronavirus continues to affect the population.
“We have a number of vulnerable people amidst our community who currently cannot afford daily bread due to the impact of the pandemic. Our sisters, brothers and elders in Lango sub-region are hit hard. They are either living on a single meal per day or not at all,” she said.
According to the aspiring Alebtong Woman MP in the 2021 polls, “We must note that a good number of people are sleeping on empty stomachs; I know of some good numbers in and around us here and I feel as a community this is the time we could reach out to them with whatever little we can donate to help them. There is complete blessings in giving and the Bible teaches that be your brother’s keeper.”
In my request, she added, in the same interview that: “I made it very clear that the farmers especially those in Lango sub-region lack quality and improved seeds so government should supply mainly planting materials, seeds, tools and hand hoes to the farmers in the sub-region.”
I equally thank HE President of Uganda, Ministry of Health and front liners for good guidance, and to farmers for following directives as we battle to eliminate COVID-19.
