On Friday, 17 April 2020, Tugende, a for-profit social enterprise formally established in 2012 in Uganda started disbursing cash relief of Uganda shilling 25,000 or Kenya Shilling 700 to its active clients in Kenya and Uganda.
Using asset finance, technology, and a customer-centric model, Tugende helps informal sector entrepreneurs dramatically increase their economic trajectory.
Operating in Uganda and Kenya with over 460 staff, the company has served over 30,000 clients and are rapidly growing and innovating.
Tugende embarked on disbursement of funds Friday morning, and since there are over 23,000 active clients, the exercise was completed on Saturday morning.
By press time, the company says all active clients had got the funds.
“Each client gets shillings 25,000 but, we shall be helping those extreme cases whenever possible,” a staff who does not want to be named, said.

- Flexibility: 2-month suspension of all penalties until 25th May 2020
- Support: UGX 25,000 / KES 700 unconditional cash transfer for 23,000+ active clients
- Team: 460+ staff working full time to support Tugende community
