Appreciation, urge as shs10.8m is raised for heart surgery of Linda, 8

Lira A total of Uganda shillings 10.8 million was raised for open-heart operation of Linda Acan, an eight year old girl from Oyam district.

The operation to take place at the Uganda Heart Institute, Kampala, followed a TND News story, under the title, OYAM: Girl, 8, fights for her life as broke family can’t afford heart surgery.

The article soon drew the attention of the public, with well-wishers acting swiftly to the cause.

Dr Mark Okwir of Lira Regional Referral Hospital has been central in saving the life of the little child and also in mobilising for resources.

The self-sacrificing cause saw some Lango natives and their friends, at home and outside – including different organisations and companies contributing generously for the teen.

In his appreciation message and guide to leaders, with key focus on the subject: “The case for a modern Heart Institute for Uganda”Uganda’s Ambassador to United Kingdom – H.E Julius Peter Moto, said:

“Little Linda is on her way to get the needed operation. She is not alone in Uganda. All of us or our immediate relatives are candidates of heart conditions. Just as we aired out our voices on Lango roads and other services this morning, I call upon our Members of Parliament to ensure that the matter of heart health is raised on the floor of Parliament for its inclusion in the budget 2020/21, for the benefit of all Ugandans, if it has not been done so. The establishment of a modern Heart Institute is long overdue, with the associated staff development program for the benefit of all Ugandans. Ad-hoc fundraising like we just did for Little Linda are good but unsustainable.

“Take my comments in good faith.”

He added: “Dr Mark, I wish to thank you wholeheartedly for raising awareness and spearheading the fundraising for saving the Little Linda Acan, a Lango girl with a heart condition. She could have been the daughter or granddaughter of any one of us! In the same vein, I thank everyone for donating funds to save Linda. Dr Mark, and all donors, you have demonstrated a duty of Love and Care. May God reward you at His own time.”
