Lira –Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces [UPDF] has ended their recruitment exercise for Lango sub-region hosted by Lira district.

And according to last year’s timetable released by Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, districts in the sub-region like Otuke, Alebtong, Amolatar, Kole, Dokolo, Oyam, Kwania and Apac were to converge at Akii Bua grounds in Lira Municipality for the exercise.

At the end of the exercise on Thursday, army says over 2000 recruits for regular and professional forces had turned up from the above districts. It added that, of the overwhelming numbers, only 83 recruits were successful.

Earlier in the day, misfortune arose after a man who had turned up for the recruitment exercise at dusty Akii-Bua ground went ‘mad’ and later hospitalised. He had run nearly five kilometers

Major Caeser Olweny, the UPDF 4th Division spokesperson says Patrick Olet, who’s a resident of Agweng sub-county, Erute County North in Lira district, started showing weird behaviours after finishing a 5-kilometre road run exercise.

Maj. Olweny spoke further: “He had come to try his luck but he could not make it to the final stage. We rushed him to the hospital together with other candidates who collapsed because we wanted to save their lives.”

“We later contacted their family members to inform them about their conditions,” army spokesperson added.
