GLCSMS and TND News announces inaugural Real Story Award



Lira – Great Lakes Centre for Strategic Media Studies [GLCSMS] and TND News vision is to see media institutions with professionals, hardworking and result driven journalists who are informing the public.

The GLCSMS, especially was also established to retrain practicing journalists and media houses in the country – especially those operating in northern Uganda.

In its aspiration to achieve the above, the organisation’s executive has announced significant award for exceptional stories published or aired and have caused societal change in many ways in northern and eastern Uganda .

Real Story Award [RSA] 2020 will recognise journalists in print, online and electronic media for their outstanding journalism works in the last six months.

Announcing the inaugural award in Lira town Monday, Mr Milton Emmy Akwam – the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of GLCSMS and TND News says: “Two years ago when GLCSMS came into being, I pledged to see an era of new media, improved journalism in the region. Today, I’m happy to announce that next year we will be recognizing excellent female and male journalists in our region.”

“Awaiting official date for the award ceremony, second week of February 2020 has been chosen,” he added.

According to Mr Akwam, “media should disseminate real story and be mindful of its outcomes. To us, some media houses and journalists in northern and eastern Uganda have done extraordinary journalism and must be recognised.”  

In his opening remark on Wednesday 23 October 2019 during the 2nd Annual Media Conference held at All Saints University Lango [ASUL], Mr Akwam, the chief convener, said: “Transforming our media is our task [all stakeholders] and we have to use all possible means to achieve it.”

The 2019 Media Conference was held under the theme: “Roles of Media, Stakeholders in Development and Prosperity.”  It was officiated by State Minister for Northern Uganda, Honourable Grace Freedom Kwiyucwiny.

Brief about the RSA Award

Stories to be shortlisted and authors recognised must be in the following categories: Health, Environment, Court, Education, Tech and Innovation, Agriculture, Business, Tourism and Culture only. It must have been published or aired from 1st August 2019 to 26th January 2020.

A winner in each category will receive US$250 and second-runner up will receive US$ 150, a certificate and a plaque respectively. The colourful event will take place in Lira Municipality.

Journalists from Lango, Acholi, West Nile and Teso sub-regions are all eligible to apply.

Experienced media experts will form a panel to decide winners and runner-up. Submission starts on 1st November 2019 until 26th January 2020.
