Athletics showdown turns regional

The national athletics activities that have been centrally organized in Kampala for the last three months has now been shifted to upcountry  (regional championships).

According to Namayo Mawerere, Publicity Secretary  Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF), the national calendar activities have been balanced to include six championships  organized at regional levels namely; Kyabazinga (Busoga), Mayank (West Nile), Central (Buganda), Eastern (Teso, Bugisu, Karamoja, Bukedi and Sebei), Northern (Acholi and Lango) and Western (Kigezi, Ankole, Bunyoro and Tooro).

The regional championships are some of the events organized by the federation to assist athletes qualify for the 12th All Africa Games, World Championships and World University Games due later this year.

Eastern region is set to host the first series of the event on June 8, 2019 in Soroti and will be followed by  five others running concurrently. 

Kyabazinga Championships will be hosted at Busoga University ground in Iganga and Mayank at Zombo on June 15 while Central at Namboole with Etolu Memorial meet in Soroti on June 22.

The regional series conclude on June 29 with Kitgum hosting the Northern event combined with Arop Memorial meet and Mbarara for the Western Championships.

The regional championships will also  assist, prepare  district teams  for the National Championships that climax the track and field season due July 26, 2019 at Mandela Stadium.  

The aim of the regional championships is to take athletics to the grassroot level and use it as a vehicle to spot talents and also market the sport upcountry.
