The Acholi tourism cluster is grappling with acute challenges that is hindering their effective operation in the sub-region.
Kotina Rose Mary, the coordinator miss tourism northern region, comprising of Lango and Acholi sub-regions says.
Ms Kotina expressed that in several occasions they are not being supported by both leaders and community in their activities.
She says even in the recent Acholi cultural festival held late last year, they were made to pay huge amount, Uganda shillings 8 million under Uganda Tourism Board to secure a place for exhibitions of their art pieces.
She added further that they are not being directly supported by leaders and communities in Acholi yet “they are trying to make the culture sell worldwide and their empowerment and promotion of girls”, adding that: “We have a challenge of not winning any contest because the region is poor and lacks cooperation.”
Brenda Achan, Miss tourism northern region also revealed that it is very hard for them to win national competition due to lack of supports and corporation from northern region.
“Much as it is competitive, we are going to be strong and continue upholding the beauty of Acholi and northern Uganda culture,” she said, appealing to the community and leaders to give them maximum supports.
Marcelino Aber Ocitti who was the second runner up miss tourism northern Uganda said their main aim is to promote tourism and culture.
“There are still challenges of ignorance by the community about the benefits of tourism as well as lack of advertisement,” she tells our reporter.
“Annual conference and public dialogue should be organized to open the mindset of the community towards tourism industry,” she appeals.
Recently, deputy Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny Dolo commended Acholi culture as the riches culture in the world with numerous unique natural creatures that can attract tourists.
Justice Dolo also appealed that those places (tourist sites) needs to be maintained as pride of northern region in general.
