Four police, 8 civilians arrested for trekking Agago hill over mineral

– A total of 12 people are being investigated by police and UPDF intelligence at Aswa police river region headquarters in Gulu after they were arrested from Lapono hill in Agago district on suspicion that they were searching for minerals.

The suspects who include four police officers and eight civilians from Abim district were arrested recently after the community leaked their presence on Lapono hill to police in Patongo town in Agago district.

According to Jimmy Patrick Okema, the eight suspects were arrested towards the end of September and were in custody at Patongo police station under investigation before they were transferred to the regional police headquarters in Gulu town.

This was after the Patongo District Police Commander revealed he was being threatened on phone to release the suspects by people alleging to be from State House.

Okema said according to community of Lapono, the unknown people trekked the hill  for about  two days, and   police  have confirmed that before the suspects came on the hill, there was a private aircraft that also toured the same hill for days and these made the police believe the possibly the hills has minerals.

He however didn’t disclose the minerals found at Lapono hill.

He identified the suspect as Julius Bayali, Eketeu Joseph, George Othieno, Eddy Opolot, Dungu, Ahmed Lukwago, Amos Kisembo, and Kigozi Lubowa.

Among others are the police officers including Dicken Turinaiwe, Isaac Edimo, Kenneth Bongomin, and Charles Mungumiyo all from Abim district who were providing protection to the eight men.
