Dead. Pr Opio Jorom

Pastor Opio Jorom widely known as pastor Jorom based in Lira is in critical condition after suicidal attempt – TND News Uganda has learnt.

Mr Opio Jorom who this year spent a larger part of his life in UPDF detention after he was linked to the SPLM – In Opposition  [SPLM-IO], a South Sudan’s rebel group, attempted to end his personal life on Friday afternoon.

Pastor Jorom according to a tipoff to TND News Uganda Lira based reporter Frank Oyugi, was found helpless by his neighbors at his home in Junior Quarters in Adyel Division, Lira Municipality.

It is widely believed that he took poisonous liquid which nearly caused his death. Opio is renting a house behind the chambers of lawyer Stella Acan of Acan & Company Advocates.

By press time, which clinic or hospital he was admitted to was still unknown.

Around March 10th 2018, Pastor Opio Jorom, a staunch die-hard of the National Resistance Movement [NRM] party was arrested from Lira and whisked to the 4th Division Army headquarters on allegations of recruiting youth from Uganda to join Sudan People’s Liberation Movement -in-Opposition (SPLM-IO)

UPDF 4th Division commander, Brig Emmanuel Kanyesigye confirmed on 14th March 2018 that the pastor during a joint operation by the UPDF 4th Division intelligence unit and the Police Flying Squad was allegedly recruiting Ugandan youth into the SPLM-IO.

But Sudan People’s Liberation Movement -in-Opposition (SPLM-IO), a rebel group in South Sudan then dismissed the claims that   Opio Jorom was recruiting Ugandan youth for them.

SPLM -IO does not know or have anyone called Jorom Opio in its ranks or file.

SPLM-IO is a rebel group loyal to Riek Machar and has been fighting to push out of power President Salv Kirr prior to recent permanent pact signed by the two leaders.

Pastor Jorom was then freed after spending nearly two months in UPDF detention. Ever since he came back, he lived a low profile life and did not offer any interview to the media.
