MP Francis Zaake charged with treason, leaves for india

Francis Zaake has been charged with treason and allowed to leave for India for medical treatment.

The ailing Mityana Municipality MP, Francis Zaake Butebi has been charged with treason, joining other five MPs – Bobi Wine, Kassiano Wadri, Paul Mwiri, Gerald Karuhanga, ex Makindye East MP, Mike Mabike and dozens of other Ugandans.

Zaake was also charged with another offence of escaping from custody following his arrest on August 13, 2018 from Arua town.

Mr Zaake was allegedly tortured by security forces in Arua and left for dead. After he was admitted to Arua referral hospital in critical state, according to Police spokesperson, Emilian Kayima, Zaake escaped from safe custody.

Mid last month, he was found dumped at the gate of Lubaga hospital and soon, he was admitted there for about two weeks.

With his health condition worsening every hour, Doctors advised he should be transferred to India for better medical management.

His Lawyers – Asuman Basalirwa and Nicholas Opiyo together with his relatives made it possible for the ailing legislator to be flown out to India.

However, the opposition MP who’s only 27 years of age was barred from flying out to India last week on Thursday in what government spokesperson, Ofwono Opondo told the nation that Zaake was trying to escape from justice.

Zaake was barred at Entebbe Airport for not having a clearance from Criminal Investigations Department [CID] and arrested by Police alongside his friend, Bobi Wine who was also heading to United States for specialized treatment.
