Ailing Uganda opposition MPs intercepted at Entebbe Airport by security personnel

Two of the five arrested and released Ugandan opposition MPs of Arua political bad games were intercepted and barred from traveling out of Uganda for further medical care.

Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine, the Kyandondo East Independent MP and Mityana Municipality MP, Francis Zaake were arrested by joint security forces on arrival at Entebbe International Airport on Thursday afternoon and evening.

The two legislators, all is visible pain following their arrest and allege torture by soldiers attached to the President Sentry and Police, were admitted at Lubaga Hospital in Kampala.

However, their deteriorating health statuses, prompted doctors to recommend their immediate referrals abroad for specialized medical tests and management.

For Bobi Wine, both Chief Magistrates’ Court in Gulu and Gulu High Court ruled that the basis for giving him a non cash bond was to allow him see ‘personal doctors’ of his choice.

His travel abroad was not restricted as well by the two Courts.

Bobi Wine and his with Barbie Itungo Kyagulanyi and few others were to board a plane to United States of America while Zaake was to be flown to India, all on medical grounds.

However, Police spokesperson, Emilian Kayima – in a press release after the arrest of Mityana Municipality MP from Entebbe Airport, says, Zaake escaped from Police custody from Arua hospital.

Before his arrest, in his worrying health state, Police had demanded Lubaga hospital management hands Zaake to them for referral to Mulago national hospital for better treatment.

Ailing MPs relatives and Lubaga hospital management were said to have defied such security orders.

Investigations revealed a number of suspects including Hon Francis Zaake Mutebi, Member of Parliament Mityana municipality, who either directly and/or indirectly occasioned these offences. Thirty three of the suspects are already charged before the court. Hon Francis Zaake was arrested on the 13 August 2018, but developed a condition which necessitated hospitalization. As a result, he was taken to Arua referral hospital under police custody. At the hospital, he was received, admitted and treated.

The police allowed the medical personnel attend to him uninterrupted and in privacy, while maintaining guard outside. He took advantage of the situation on his own, and/or aided by some elements, escape from custody. Police investigations subsequently discovered that he was hospitalized at Rubaga hospital in Kampala. Police refrained from interfering with his medical treatment, but kept a keen eye on him, part of Police statement read.

Government too, on Thursday says Hon Zaake was a suspect after escaping from Police custody in Arua.

“Mityana municipality MP Francis Zaake is a suspect on the run who disappeared from lawful Uganda police Force custody and should be arrested at the earliest. He could be trying to escape from justice,” government spokesperson, Ofondo Opondo says.

The ailing MPs Lawyers, Nicolas Opio and Asuma Basalirwa described the arrests as very nasty and brutal.

“The Police have violently abducted Bobi Wine from the airport, forced him into a police ambulance and is being driven to unknown destination,” Wine’s Lawyer, Nicolas Opio tweeted Thursday immediately after MP’s re-arrest.

Both Francis Zaake and Bobi Wine were driven under tight security to Kirudu government Hospital located in Makindye division, Kampala.
