Man who faked own kidnap, took himself to police after relatives wired him shs.2.5m



Police at Lira Central Police Station are holding Odyek Jimmy, 31, a Lango native from Ocukuru village, Boroboro parish, Adekokwok sub-county in Lira district for faking own kidnap.

According to Police, Odyek has been charged with obtaining money by false pretense; contrary to section 305 of the Penal Code Act vide CRB 2589/2018.

On the 5, August 2018, Mr. Odyek gave several phone calls to his relatives claiming that he had been kidnapped from Uhuru bar, Central division in Lira Municipality by unknown armed people moving in a motor vehicle.

He told his relatives that the kidnappers were demanding for shs.2.5million ransom or else they would terminate his life.

David Ongom Mudong, the North Kyoga Region Police spokesperson confirmed the fake kidnap to TND News Uganda on Wednesday.

Mudong added that on Tuesday, 7, August, shs.2.5million was deposited to Odyek’s personal mobile money account by his relatives to save his life.

However, Mudong says, that same day [yesterday] Odyek reported to Lira CPS claiming that he had been released by the kidnappers after he gave them money,

“Upon interrogation, Odyek revealed that he faked a kidnap to raise some money to sort out his problems,” Mudong revealed.

The Police spokesperson added: “As the Police we do warn the general public to refrain from such vice because it’s not acceptable within the law. Odyek’s case file is due for completion and submission to Resident State Atoner [RSA] for legal advice and probable prosecution.”
