MANY shops and groceries in Makindye division and Kampala Central Business District [CBD] have hiked the amount of airtime scratch cards by shs.200.
One of the groceries located at Gogonya village in Nsambya and many shop attendants dealing in airtime and Mobile Money services say the increment was from above.
In one of the groceries our reporter went to buy Airtel airtime worth shs2, 000, the female owner says, “effective now, all airtime scratch cards are up by shs.200.”
“We have been directed to increase the price by shs.200. That’s it,” she added.
However, MTN Uganda on being asked about the surprising development and whether they announced any increment in unison with other telecoms like Africell and Aritel, denies it.
“That’s untrue. That is theft,” an officer on Customer care desk sounded.
“Anything to do with increase, we announce it. Don’t accept to be cheated. Those traders are taking the advantage to cheat people,” he added.
Meanwhile, the telecommunication giant, MTN has apologized to latest bamboozle, affirming further that no increment has been made.
Both MTN, Airtel, Africell, UTL have their lowest denomination of airtime scratch cards starting from shs.500, shs.1,000, shs.2,000 and above.
Ugandans are furious after government recently introduced social media tax OTT and Mobile Money tax this financial year. To many, the OTT tax is disallowing them to communicate freely and on social media.
Since the introduction of OTT tax, access to social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Viber, WhatsApp, among others have been limited.
Similarly, the 1 percent Exercise Duty on Mobile Money services like sending and receiving has been taxed by government.
