Man, 39, sentenced to six years in jail for murdering wife

A 39 year old man will spend 6 years in jail for murdering his wife.

Richard Ocen, a resident of Adola parish, Amach Sub County in Lira district pleaded guilty to the charge and subsequently got sentenced.

Prosecution told Court that in the evening of 23.02.2014, Ocen who was earlier on chased away from his marital home by his wife on allegation of domestic violence, returned home insisting to spend a night.

That night, now a convict, Ocen hits his wife’s head several times with a pistol before fleeing the scene.

The deceased body was discovered four days later in a decaying state.

Court further heard that a jacket and a local sandal belonging to the convict was found at the scene of crime before he handed himself to the police.

While appearing before Lira High Court on Thursday morning, Ocen pleaded guilty to the murder charge.

However, State Attorney Gloria Akello told Court that a plea bargain session between two clan members from the accused [convict] and deceased’s side revealed that blood compensation was paid.

“After plea bargain between the two clans, blood compensation was paid to the deceased family and both clans agreed that the accused serves only 10 years in jail. But then we also realized that the accused has already served 4 years on remand, that is why we pray that the accused be sentenced to only 6 years,” State told Court.

Counsel Adar Patrick of Adar and Company Advocates, advocate of the convict told Court that his client fully participated in the murder following a plea bargain session which was done in local language and that the [convict] stated and understood well.

Before passing his judgment, Justice Alex Macky Ajiji cautioned the public against taking someone’s own life.

“Having considered the 4 years and 3 months he has already spent on remand and having received a plea of guilt from the accused, I therefore sentence him on his own plea to six [6] years in prison,” Lira High Court Judge Justice Alex Macky Ajiji ruled.
