The 2018 Airtel Rising Stars tournament is underway at Akii Bua Memorial Stadium in Lira town amid low turn up from teams expected to participate.
The under 17 tournament brings together both boys and girls from the district level up to the national level.
Peter Erem Erina, the coordinator under 17 of the Airtel Rising Stars for northern region who also doubles as the chairperson Lira District Football Association (LDFA) confirmed the development on Tuesday.
“The two days event is aimed at raising two teams for both boys and girls who will represent Lango Sub region at the regional encounter in Gulu on the 3rd of July 2018,” Erina said.
He says teams already registered are Green Angels Football Academy, Northern Rock Football Academy, Premier Progressive F.C (both boys and girls) and King James F.C also both boys and girls.
In the first match of the day, Green Angels F.C played a goalless draw with Northern Rock F.C.
Erem however told TND Sports that the turn up for this year is low which may in turn weaken their participation at regional competition due in Gulu town.
He also cited financial constraints and some games coaches resisting to be screened as some of the challenges facing this years’ tournament.
Referring to the football stars from Lango Sub-region like Okello Allan, Awany Timothy among others who are playing professional football in big clubs like KCCA F.C and Express, Erem called upon parents to always support their children to be able to exploit their talents in football.
Most of the participants however, expressed optimism that they will emerge the best to represent Lango.
The National Airtel Rising Star championship will take place from 24 to 26 July this year in Fort Portal.
Airtel Rising Stars tournament is jointly organized by Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) and Airtel.
