Nekyon death aftermath: ‘Family Lawyer’ Makmot Kibwanga still in Police detention

In Police custody, Adam Makmot Kibwanga.

FIVE days after his arrest for lettering to Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Kibuli that the death of former first post Independence Minister Akbar Adoko Nekyon was questionable, City Lawyer Adam Makmot Kibwanga is still in detention.

Adam Makmot Kibwanga of Makmot Kibwanga & Company Advocates was arrested by Police in Kampala last week on Thursday after he disguised himself as Nekyon’s family Lawyer whilst getting instruction from family members to write to Police to investigate the cause of Nekyon death.

In his May 8 letter, Makmot averred that the family was not contented with the death of their elder, calling for inquiries.

The letter called for investigation into potential homicide, averring that the former Minister died under what he termed as ‘mysterious circumstances.’

Furthermore, the Lawyer said in the letter to CID that Akbar Nekyon died from Sheraton Kampala Hotel and one of the two police officers hired to guard him was arrested and isolated.

On Monday, Police say investigations show there were no instructions given to Makmot and or his Law firm and no proof that the late passed on from alleged Sheraton Hotel was genuine.

Before his arrest, close family members including clan members distanced themselves from the Lawyer’s letter.

“Sheraton is equally troubled and they plan to take legal action,” Uganda Police Force Spokesperson, Emilian Kayima told journalists on Monday.

Uganda Police Spokesperson, Kayima added that the suspect will be arraigned in Courts when investigation is completed.

Nekyon died on 4 May in Kampala and was laid to rest at his ancestral home in Apoki village, Chegere Sub-county in Apac district on Saturday 5.
