Mudslides hit homes, gardens in Manafwa district

MANAFWA DISTRICT- Residents living in the three Sub-counties of Weswa, Kaato and Nabutsale in Manafwa district are homeless after avalanche hit their area.

Preliminary reports on Thursday had put six homesteads affected following weighty rainfall that started on Wednesday morning.

Besides affecting people, food crops like maize, beans and others were also beaten to ground level.

Wepukulu Simon, one of the affected locals told TND News that his residential houses, crop gardens and animals gravely demolished.

He further added that the disaster has left him barehanded, calling on government to support him and others now in state of anguish.

“I have nothing to eat, nowhere to sleep,” Wepukulu said while weeping for immediate help.

Micheal Mayeku, the Local Council III Chairperson for Weswa Sub-county in Manafwa district told our Reporter that the heavy rainfall started at around 9am when most people had left homes for work.

“The affected homesteads might reach 20. Other areas are registering a similar disaster as well,” Mayeku said.

“I call upon district leaders, area Members of Parliament together with the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness to rescue the affected people,” Weswa Sub-county chair added.
