Lira Chief Magistrates Court on Monday sentenced Jasper Okech, 33, to 15 years in prison for attempted murder.

The judgment follows a land wrangle four years ago between him and Paskolina Oming, a widow whom he later chopped off her arms.

A resident of Aryebi village, Omolo Parish, Iceme Sub-county in Oyam district, Paskolina Oming was on the 25 April, 2014 waylaid by Okech Jasper, one of the step sons as she returned home from the market with a group of four people.

She was gravely beaten by the convict who intentionally cut her two arms.

Before reading the judgment, Chief Magistrate Alex Musabe Korocho stated that a number of things were taken into considerations which included proof that the act of the attempted murder was committed by the accused.

The State Attorney had earlier told Court that Okech committed the aggravated offense which has deprived the victim from her only livelihood although he is a first time offender.

The accused [convict] lawyer, Counsel Patrick Omara argued that the convict felt remorseful having noticed the magnitude of his action and pleaded for mercy.

“We should look at a circumstance of the fact that he is a young man who could have driven his energy in a wrong direction. I pray that he is given a sentence which gives him an opportunity to remain a good example to the youth in the community,” Counsel Omara defends his client before he was convicted.

Reading the judgment, Alex Korocho explained that Okech’s action of disappearance upon committing the offense and shortly after court granted him bail showed that he was not remorseful.

“The victim in her elderly situation has been reduced to a helpless person without functions of both arms and if there is any situation where a clear signal should be sent out as a warning for the citizens not to carry the law is their own hands, then this is the most applicable circumstances,” he added.

“You will therefore be sentenced to 15 years in jail,” Mushabe ruled.

Found guilty of attempted murder, Okech Jasper being escorted by Prison warders after he was sentenced to 15 years.

Reacting to the judgment, Paskolina Oming said she is not contented with the ruling, adding that she is willing to file a new suit for compensation.

“Am not satisfied, am not contented with 15 years because Okech has literally killed me. I’m dead. 15 years is very little. I wanted him to be sentenced to at least 50 years in prison because he is still young yet am already old and I’m hoping to file a new suit for compensation of about shs.100 million considering my status,” she told this news website, Monday.
