President Museveni has ordered and directed deployment of 24,000 Local Defense Unit security personnel and release of Uganda shilling 57 billion to fight urban criminals in Kampala and Wakiso districts.
Museveni made the directives on Sunday night while addressing Ugandans on the current state of affairs in the country.
These directives come at a time prominent Uganda citizens are being murdered by unknown people, many of whom are still at large.
“Urban crimes have seen Joan Magezi, Felix Kaweesi, Major Kigundu, Magara, Abiriga and now Kirumira scaring people,” Museveni said.
“We shall recruit 24,000 LDUs for Kampala and Wakiso districts to man these trading centers,” Museveni ordered.
“This is going to cost an extra shs.57 billion,” he added.
On how these LDUs will be recruited, Gen. Museveni added that Local Council one Chairpersons, majority of them belonging to NRM party, will vet them.
“LC One chairpersons to tell us who is good and bad for the task.”
According to the CiC, Crime Preventers, recently made part of the Reserve Force of the UPDF, will be deployed in Kampala and Wakiso as LDUs.
Museveni says these young girls and boys however need to undergo some training before taking the task using ‘our gun’ to fight them.
